The Highways agency has just released notice for planned maintenance on the westbound M4 near Junction 12 in Berkshire. This planned maintenance is on the bridge over the M4 and is set to last until March 2014.
Important components will be repaired on the bridge that carries the M4 over the Reading to Taunton railway line, to the east of junction 12. The work will involve narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit on the westbound M4 with overnight lane closures.
Bridge components, like all assets, need repairing over time. The concrete on the bridge supports will be repaired and new protection systems installed to help prolong the life of the structure. The majority of the work will be carried out underneath the structure and so at times although work is ongoing it may appear that there is no-one working.
We have planned the work to minimise disruption and will keep three lanes open to traffic at peak times. The westbound exit slip road will be closed at junction 12 on a few occasions; these will be carried out overnight, when traffic flows are lowest.
Narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit will be in place on the westbound carriageway from Sunday 20 October for the safety of road users and roadworkers..
Lane closures will be in place overnight, between 10pm and 6am, on the westbound carriageway.
